                                             Wabakimi 2010

On the morning of Thursday Aug.5th Linny and me, Kelly and Kaya and Roy and Diane set off on our Wabakimi Adventure. After 2 days driving and 1600 km. we arrived at Wabakimi Outfitters Eco-Lodge just outside Armstrong, which is 250kms. North of Thunder Bay. I’d used the Outfitters for info on the park and booking of our train tickets. There are no set campsites and no signage or properly maintained portages in the park which is huge, roughly the size of P.E.I. As I navigate the old way with map and compass I would be checking things very carefully, I haven’t been lost yet and didn’t intend to start now!! We did take a satellite phone with us in case of emergency and piece of mind.  The park is certainly a wild place and much wind damage was evident throughout our trip. We lucked out with the weather, our first day was fairly windy and quite rough when we got out onto Carribou Lake which is a big body of water with many small islands to navigate around. We paddled North West on the Carribou River finding our way around several portages and into Smoothrock Lake which is huge, thank goodness we had a beautiful calm day and the water was like glass. We ended up paddling around 28 kms.+ to find somewhere to camp. Smoothrock is a very pretty Lake with lots of islands and rocky outcrops. We continued South down Smoothrock to Fantasia portage which was an easy 1200 mtrs. and pretty, laiden with lichen most of the way through. It was so hot we sat in the creek to keep cool. We spent our rest day, the only day it rained camped at the end of the portage. Our last day we paddled the Lookout River to Ominawash Lake completing 7 portages before midday, mainly around rapids and waterfalls, very pretty. We camped in the grounds of a cabin owned by the outfitters only 200mtrs. from the train tracks. We were up and waiting for the train by 7.30a.m. which was due at 9.00a.m. Miss this one and it’s 3 days before the next one. The train showed up at 11.35 a.m. We loaded our canoes and gear and were on our way out of the bush back to Armstrong where the outfitter picked us up. Great Trip! Great Weather, Great Company. Thanks again to Linny for putting up with me getting this together but it was worth it.
